Each year, the North Charleston Arts festival holds a design competition for the artwork image that will be included in all of their festival advertising. The image must be marketable and appeal to festival patrons from a broad range of backgrounds. The artwork image will be reproduced on billboards, program booklets, posters, t-shirts and postcards.
Keeping this in mind, I created "Lets Get Kraken" specifically for this design competition. The color palette is fun and eye-catching (did you know that yellow is the #1 used color on billboards scoring highest with gross impressions?) and translates well if converted to black and white. The image is interesting, relevant and workable flipped sideways and upside down. Individual segments of the piece also can be captured for interesting textural elements in smaller marketing pieces and seriously, who wouldn't want to rock a kraken on a t-shirt?
I'm thankful that neat opportunities like this competition are available to artists and hope they dig the Kraken!
