H. P. Lovecraft's initial short story, "The Call of Cthulhu", was published in Weird Tales in 1928 and established the character as a malevolent entity hibernating within an underwater city in the South Pacific called R'lyeh. The imprisoned Cthulhu is apparently the source of constant anxiety for mankind at a subconscious level, and also the subject of worship by a number of human religions (located several places worldwide, including New Zealand, Greenland, Louisiana, and the Chinese mountains) and other Lovecraftian monsters (called Deep Ones and Mi-Go). The short story asserts the premise that, while currently trapped, Cthulhu will eventually return. His worshippers chant "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn."
What in the world could be going on here? West Of – West Ashley's Weekly Community Newspaper recently purchased 35 refurbished newspaper vending machines. With the help of chART Outdoor Initiative & Gallery, 35 Charleston-based artists are using their creative vision to make each box a unique piece of community art.
This is a sneak peak of the box I'm working on. Of course I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get jiggy with Cthulhu and mind bend on the idea of an unsuspecting soul looking for a paper and he unwittingly ends up with a lap full of tentacles.
Come check out the grand reveal of all 35 boxes at a reception on September 5th from 6-9pm! I promised I wouldn't blow the surprise by posting the full monty; just yet!
Before being placed at various locations in the West Ashley community, the boxes will all be on display at various Avondale-based businesses and the public is invited to walk to each of these "galleries" to view them the night of the reception. You can vote for the ones you like best by feeding quarters into your favorite machine(s) –
100% of the proceeds go to ChART Outdoor Initiative & Gallery. Hors d'oeuvres, beer, & wine available. Indoor "galleries" include WestOf Newspaper office, [non`pa*reil] photography , Lava Salon, Avondale Wine & Cheese, and Jericho Advisors.
One of the exciting bonuses for me about this project ~ I have the opportunity to meet so many insanely talented artists from the Charleston community all in one place. Well, hey ... so do YOU! Don't miss the event on September 5th!
These are few of my favorite participants that I'm familiar with and I can't wait to meet some new friends and to get to know their work! You can click on their pictures and you'll be magically transported to their worlds.
