Do you know what's cool? Finding an unexpected public piano tucked away in an alley, back street or sidewalk in your community. Public pianos are free to play, bring unexpected joy and offer a unique experience to perform publically. Art and music brings people together.
When I was approached to create a unique music and art experience for the Avondale ChARTarama 2 Piccolo Spoleto Festival I knew what would resonate with folks ... a public piano at the center of 3-day mini events. Even better, if it could raise significant funds for charity we'd be on to something.
Both Braeden and I recognize the need for free art and free music in every community. Outside of our Black Tie Music Academy locations you'll find public pianos. Each quarter we think about whats happening in the community and we theme the pianos to celebrate.
We've caught young and old playing the pianos at all hours of the day. We've experienced an impromptu concert by high school girls complete with back-up dancers, landscapers at 5:30am enjoying a brief music break and a senior couple who stop by once a week to sing love songs to each other.
If you're lucky and you stumble upon a public piano in your journeys please take the time to sit down and play a few notes. It's fun!
